Kenya’s weekly tea average has surpassed that of the Colombo auction, according to Ceylon Tea Brokers Plc.
It said that during the first two sales in May of the Mombasa auction - namely sale No. 18 and No. 19 where Kenyan tea averages for the first time after many years had superseded the Colombo auction averages in dollar terms - Kenyan teas sold at the Mombasa auction for sale No. 18 and No. 19 this year averaged $ 3.01 per kg and $ 3.05 per kg respectively while the Colombo auction averages for the comparison sales averaged $ 2.96 per kg and $ 2.95 per kg. The Kenyan tea averages as well as the Mombasa auction averages cumulatively in dollar terms have gained this year in comparison to 2014. The Colombo auction averages cumulatively have declined in comparison to the same period last year.
“Therefore, the prices of teas offered at the Colombo auction look attractive and good in value for shippers as opposed to being perceived as an expensive auction centre,” Ceylon Tea Brokers said.
