At the Tea Auctions held on 30 October 2013, an invoice of Magedara Estate BOP1 achieved an all-time Colombo Tea Auction record price of Rs. 760 per kilogram for the Low Grown category, surpassing the previous record price of Rs. 1400 established by another factory in only the previous week.
Low Grown prices have been at peak levels in recent weeks following heavy buying by Middle Eastern buyers. The teas were actively pursued by many leading buyers in view of the useful quality of the leaf appearance and liquors and the ultimate buyer of this invoice was Commercial Export Company, a top-end buyer of Low Grown teas for the Middle East as well as Russia. The teas were sold through the catalogue of Lanka Commodity Brokers Ltd.
Magedara factory is situated in the Galle district and processes green leaf of an exceptionally high standard whilst paying special attention to all aspects of manufacture. This factory is owned by Wakeel Hajiyar, a prominent businessman from the Southern Province.
