Middle East and Maldives top Lankan fruit and vegetable buyers - CCC

Sri Lanka exports nearly 90% of its fruits and vegetables to the Middle Eastern and Maldivian markets, while 75% of processed items are exported to the European Union, a new study by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce found.
The study, titled ‘Fruit and Vegetable Sector Analysis 2013’, reveals that Sri Lanka annually produces around 800,000 metric tonnes of fruit and vegetable for the purpose of export to numerous countries. It also stated that the island nation’s exports have grown from just 10 to 12 varieties to around 135 varieties in the recent past. Sri Lanka’s fresh fruit and vegetable exports have recorded a 21.8% jump during the first half 2013.
The US also imported around 4.5 million kilograms of Sri Lankan fruits and vegetables annually.
The study, which is available for purchase at the Ceylon Chamber, includes details on the fruit industry in Sri Lanka, global fruit production, global export and Import markets of fruits, the top 10 fruits globally exported and imported and target extent and production of fruits for 2014.
