Steps have been taken to enhance production of organic fertiliser and thereby minimise the expenditure being incurred for the import of chemical fertiliser. The budget proposal to pay Rs. 40 per kilogram of paddy produced using organic fertilizer is one of these measures.
Another measure being taken is to enhance waste management under the ‘Pilisaru program’. This project is being implemented with the assistance of local Government bodies to enhance compost fertiliser manufacturing programs across the country. Under this initiative compost bins have been distributed among the people on Pradeshiya Sabha levels.
An awareness program is also being conducted to educate people on compost projects, especially in the Mahaweli Development Zone which accounts for the highest acreage of paddy production in the country.
