During the British period, large extents of land from Sri Lanka’s wet zone got converted to monoculture plantations, impacting the biodiversity of some of the most sensitive ecosystems in the country. Many of these plantation lands share boundaries with natural forests and habitats which act as crucial refuges for highly threatened and endangered species of biota. The Sri Lanka Business and Biodiversity (SL B&B) Platform of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) is organising a networking and learning event targeted at those engaged in the plantation sector to raise awareness on biodiversity conservation and help provide solutions, using the platform to improve the flow of information, joining forces for mutual benefit. The event will be a combination of two individual sessions. Session I themed ‘Biodiversity Conservation, Sustainable Use and Management’ will be held from 09:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Session II themed ‘Efficiencies and Certifications: Gaining the Market Edge’ will be held from 1:30 to 05:45 p.m. Both sessions are scheduled to be held on 26 November at the Sankathani Hall of the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration, 28/10, Malalasekera Mawatha, Colombo 7, and will host a number of renowned national and international speakers from the field representing the government, non-government, private and academic sectors. The event will feature special guest speaker Mohammad Rafiq – Director, Long Run Initiative of the Zeitz Foundation, formerly the Senior Vice President of Rainforest Alliance and Director, Business and Biodiversity Program of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). More information on guest speaker and registration process is available at http://business-biodiversity.lk/event/plantation-sector-networking-event/. SL B&B Platform: The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) and Dilmah Conservation established the Sri Lanka Business and Biodiversity Platform to encourage and provide services to Sri Lankan businesses to engage more vigorously in the conservation and sustainable use of Sri Lanka’s unique biodiversity. One of the aims of the platform is to be a one-stop-shop for information, advice and scientific assistance to companies to preserve our natural heritage. The platform is committed to publicise the efforts of the private sector and to create a network linking Sri Lanka’s businesses, government agencies and biodiversity conservation organizations. http://business-biodiversity.lk.
