SPC Chairman Thilak Mahanama hands over a Sanstha tea packet to Addl. Secretary of Public Enterprises Development M.A. Douglas
In a bid to turn itself into a profit-making institution, the State Plantation Corporation (SPC) has begun to issue low-priced tea packets to the local market. Branded as ‘Sanstha Tea,’ the introduction of these packets, according Board Chairman Thilak Mahanama, will ensure that our people get export-quality tea for lower prices.
To this end the SPC tea factories at Kelebokke, Midland, and Rangala will be made use to produce Sanstha Tea, with nearly one million kilograms of the commodity being diverted for this express purpose.
Mahanama added that SPC and the people of this country concerned with the sector hope that this will turn the SPC into a profit-making institution by next year, given that it incurs a loss of nearly Rs. 300 for every kilo of tea.
