Top planter appointed to Pelwatte Sugar Board

Professional planter Kenneth K. Upali Wijeyesekera has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Pelwatte Sugar Industries Ltd.



Wijeyesekera is a Fellow of the Institute of Plantation Management. He commenced his planting career with the Sterling Tea Plantation Company of James Finlay and Co. and later with George Steuart Co Ltd. Following nationalisation of estates in 1975, he served the Janatha Estate Development Board (JEDB) as Superintendent of several tea plantations in the up country.

He was appointed Chairman of Board One of the Sri Lanka State Plantations Corporation and later as Director General of the Nuwara Eliya/Uda Pusselawa Zone of the JEDB.

He also served the Ceylon Planters Society and the Planters Association.

Wijeyesekera was also the former Chairman of Sri Lanka Cement Corporation and at present a Director of UB Finance Co Ltd., a subsidiary of Union Bank Plc.

Pelwatte Sugar Industries also announced that Managing Director P. H. A. Wimal Karunaratne has ceased to be a Director with effect from 15 June 2012.

Karunaratna took over as MD of Pelwatte after Distilleries acquired control. He was a senior officer in the Sri Lanka Air Force and joined DCSL in 1992 as the Regional Manager (Northern) and in addition to his regional responsibilities; he was assigned with Technical Development, Research and Development areas for DCSL products.
