Uplifting the Sri Lankan farming community has been their mission for 27 years. This mission was proved a success for Unipower Ltd. at the 14th edition of the Agbiz and National Farmer Awards which was held at the BMICH in concurrence with the Pro Food/ Pro Pack and Agbiz 2015 exhibition recently.
The event saw the pioneers in introducing specialty fertiliser to Sri Lanka named the gold award winner for the ‘Best Agri Input Provider 2015’.Unipower was also recognised for their unmatched contribution towards the wellbeing of agriculture in Sri Lanka with a silver award for the ‘Best Emerging Agri Business 2015’.
Unipower is well equipped with a strong chain of world renowned global suppliers raging from Norway, Netherlands, US, Malaysia, Spain, Israel and Australia. Yara International of Norway is well-known as the No. 1 supplier in specialty fertilisers in the world. Their granule fertilisers contain nine nutrients essential to plants, which sets it apart from traditional fertilisers.
Their control released fertilisers are imported from some of the world’s leading companies in the US and the Netherlands. These fertilisers are beneficial to the crop as it can remain in the soil for up to four-five months. Therefore a small volume of fertiliser compound is able to provide macro and micro nutrients to the plant for a longer period.
The water-soluble fertilisers range is imported from GrowMore, US. These fertilisers are popular among the flower, ornamental foliage and fruit plant growers. Apart from these speciality fertilisers, Unipower also has introduced their own organic soil conditioner ‘Unigrow’ which is produced for both the local market and export market.
“Using these specialty fertilisers will result in very colorful flowers and richer tasting fruits which commands higher prices in the export trade. Even foliage or any other plants will respond with more colour, leaves and overall growth. Our range of products have the capacity to not only improve the quality of the yield but also the quality of life of the farmers and the quality of each product makes Unipower the No. 01 importer and distributor of specialty fertiliser compounds in Sri Lanka,” says Unipower Ltd. Chairman and Managing Director Jayantha Rajapakse.
Unipower Ltd. Marketing Director Anuradha Rajapakse stated: “We are also the pioneers in promoting protected agriculture techniques in Sri Lanka. We import shade nets, insect-proof nets, UVT polythene and mulch films from Israel. We have also introduced a range of high quality agriculture tools such as the revolutionary Osatu 16L knapsack sprayer from Spain and home gardening tools and equipment from Taiwan.”
“Our newest product ‘Veggie Wash’ is 100% organic and made from lime and aloe vera. It is used to wash away all harmful chemicals, waxes and germs that come in contact with the fruits and vegetables. It is currently imported from Australia, and we hope to produce this locally, from next year at our production facility situated in Ekala,” he added.
Unipower continuously seeks new avenues to support the local agriculture industry. They jointly research on agriculture with the Department of Agriculture, the Department of National Botanic Gardens and Farmers to ensure that they are well-equipped with the latest knowledge of the industry and hope to work further towards the betterment of Sri Lankan agriculture in the long run.
