Vellai Oya estate, situated in Watawala in the Hatton district, established an all time record price of Rs. 570 for an invoice of BOPF at the weekly auction held yesterday. This betters its own record price of Rs. 560 for the same grade. This line of tea was purchased by M/s Imperial Teas Ltd. and Forbes & Walker Tea Brokers Ltd. conducted the sale.
Vellai Oya is managed by M/s Watawala Plantations PLC. and is famous for its thick coloury teas which it produces throughout the year. Vellai Oya is one of the first estates to plant tea on a large scale in 1884 and has an extent of 361.50 hectares. The elevation of the estate ranges from 1,156 mts to an elevation of 1,337 mts above mean sea level. The current factory was built in 1931 at an elevation of 1,331 mts, hence, it is categorised under the Western Medium elevation category.
