Vietnam rubber crop up 21%, to plant more rubber in Laos, Cambodia

The Vietnam Rubber Group, the country’s top exporter of the commodity, plans to expand its planting area by nearly 10% to at least 430,000 hectares (1.06 million acres) by 2015, according to the company, the Saigon Giai Phong (Liberation Saigon) newspaper reports. Of the total area, a combined 130,000 hectares would be planted in Laos and Cambodia, the report said. Vietnam’s rubber production jumped 20.8% in 2013 compared with 2012, according to the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries, the Vietnam Economic Times newspaper reported. The spike pushed Vietnam up two rankings to become the world’s third largest rubber producer, the report said.
