In a milestone year for Colombo Fashion Week (CFW), the fashion development organisation is not only commemorating two decades of fashion excellence but is also gearing up to fortify the fashion ecosystem with innovative initiatives. As the fashion landscape evolves, CFW is strategically positioning itself to contribute not only to the cultural tapestry of Sri Lanka but also to address the current challenge of brain drain through the flourishing creative industry.
Fashion design, along with other creative streams, plays a vital role in expressing the cultural essence of the nation, which expands its influence beyond its geographical boundaries. In its 20th year, CFW is aligning its projects to consolidate under the common objective of expanding the cultural and creative footprint of Sri Lanka on the global stage.
At the heart of this initiative is the Emerging Designer program, an encouragement for design enthusiasts to delve into the world of fashion while emphasising the principles of responsible fashion. Complementing this is the CFW Accelerator program, which identifies five promising designers to embark on their design entrepreneurship journeys. The Italy Award identifies one promising designer who gets exposed to the international design capital to further their design career. The international program is another cornerstone, featuring two Sri Lankan designers showcasing their talents in South Asian markets, thus extending the global reach of Sri Lankan fashion with a focus on responsible and sustainable practices. Integrating crafts and education into the system will serve as a catalyst, amplifying these efforts and reinforcing the culture of responsible fashion.
CFW Holdings Managing Director Ajai Vir Singh emphasises the pivotal role of soft power in enhancing a country’s profile: “Sri Lanka is at a fascinating juncture, attracting tourists and investments. Creative industries are instrumental in elevating a country’s influence, and at CFW, our focus is on amplifying Sri Lanka’s impact through its creative prowess and responsible fashion practices. This shift requires a fresh perspective and alignment, promising an upsurge in design entrepreneurship and a cultural renaissance. The untapped potential of our creative industries is yet to be fully explored, and the time for this transformative shift is now.”
Craft inclusion approached in a structured and progressive manner, is highlighted as a crucial element in this strategic vision. Beyond being a vehicle for cultural expression, it is recognised as a potent force in promoting village economies and fostering a culture of responsible fashion. The Fashion Movement, one of CFW’s flagship initiatives, is emblematic of this approach, aligning resources to expand its South Asian footprint while fostering sustainable growth and responsible fashion practices.
As CFW embarks on this transformative journey, the fusion of creative expression, design entrepreneurship, and a commitment to responsible fashion emerges as the cornerstone of its strategy. By nurturing emerging talents, supporting innovative entrepreneurs, and leveraging the soft power of creative industries, CFW is not only shaping the future of fashion in Sri Lanka but also contributing to the nation’s broader narrative on the global stage. In a world increasingly influenced by creativity and cultural resonance, CFW’s vision for the future is poised to amplify Sri Lanka’s soft power, making a lasting impact on the international fashion landscape with a strong emphasis on responsible fashion.
