  • To work with ILO and IFC to support apparel industry

Having recently had discussions with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Joint Apparel Association Forum (JAAF) has committed to advancing its stakeholder engagement through the ‘Better Work’ program (BW) in Sri Lanka. The program aims to support the apparel industry in building back better in the post COVID-19 environment.

As the apex body representing Sri Lankan apparel, JAAF and its members aim to work in collaboration with ‘Better Work’ to improve guidelines and legislation on areas of occupational safety and health, gender, diversity and inclusion.

The program will also provide support improving Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the apparel sector.

“Our discussion with the ILO and IFC on the Better Work initiative is a demonstration of our deep commitment to managing an ethical, responsible, and sustainable supply chain that puts people at the centre,” said Secretary General of JAAF Tuli Cooray.

“Having always been at the forefront of ensuring stakeholder betterment and development overall, BW augments our efforts to ensure that we create a decent work environment, empower women, drive business competitiveness and promote inclusive economic growth.”

“The ‘Better Work’ program is a great opportunity for the apparel sector to partner and collaborate not only among stakeholders in Sri Lanka but with global partners as well. This is a significant milestone in our ability to work together to continue improving working conditions in the apparel industry,” concluded Cooray.
