The Singer Fashion Academy recently held their Annual Awards Ceremony and Fashion Show on 5 September 2013 at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. Over five hundred participants including students, parents, Singer staff and guests were in attendance at this much anticipated event and were mesmerised by the display of beautifully designed clothing and creative talent. For over fifty years, the Singer Fashion Academy has been empowering students with professional sewing know-how and expertise. A Diploma in Scientific Dressmaking and Machine Embroidery is awarded every year to prospective students at the academy. While an internationally recognised certificate is received upon the conclusion of the course; the most creative and talented students are invited to join the academy as instructors. The qualifications awarded by the Singer Fashion Academy are widely recognised as a benchmark for entrepreneurial opportunities in the fashion and dressmaking industries. Students that completed a basic course in computers were also awarded certificates at this glittering event. “Acquiring IT know-how is vital for engaging in any industry in today’s world and fashion and sewing industry is no exception,” said Singer Sri Lanka Director Sales and Sewing Marketing Kumar Samarasinghe. “At Singer Fashion Academy, we have been able to provide outstanding expertise in fashion designing, dressmaking and sewing to our students. Today, with many openings in the garment and fashion related industries, we are proud to have provided our students with skills that have empowered them to source many self-employment and employment opportunities,” Samarasinghe added. A fashion show that showcased garments created by talented students and their instructors accompanied the awards show which saw students who graduated in 2012 receive their diplomas. The fashion show covered five segments, Kandyan attire, office wear sarees, casual wear and beach wear, with the segments covering both adults’ and children’s wear. Each and every ensemble was designed and created by the Singer Fashion Academy instructresses and their students with an impeccable finish and an elegant look. Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC CEO Asoka Peiris was the chief guest at the event which was recognised as a stepping stone for the students of the Singer Fashion Academy who will now be able to make the transition from student to entrepreneur with confidence and skills. “We are confident of the interest created by the Fashion Show and many more are keen in following our course which is world class in offering industry know-how. We hope to stage a bigger, better and a more glamorous fashion show in the future that will continue to be a launching pad for successful careers of our students,” Samarasinghe said in conclusion.
