Sri Lanka’s leather and footwear industry is one of the fastest growing export sectors with potential to make an even larger contribution to the country’s GDP. The future of the industry lies in integrating high-tech sectors, new technology and contemporary design, to move into a new era of international success. A positive step in this direction is the invitation from Export Development Board Sri Lanka to the world’s leading industrial thread business, Coats Thread and Sri Lanka’s dynamic, international design campus AOD, to join forces in presenting at its annual leather and footwear show for 2015. The Leather and Footwear fashion show 2015 highlights Sri Lankan made leather accessories combined with handcrafted, designer fashion by AOD’s Island Craft project and will be presented in partnership with Coats today (Friday 6 February). Coats Sri Lanka Managing Director Douglas Aceiro said, “We are delighted to take part in this event which brings together the Sri Lankan Government, represented by the Ministry of Industries and the EDB, Coats’ thread products and the cutting-edge creativity of AOD design campus. Coats engages with a variety of industries, such as leather and footwear, which need specialty thread and zips solutions. Through this partnership, we hope to share our expert technology with the Sri Lankan leather and footwear industry, and help further build its profile as a major global sourcing hub for the sector.” As the world’s leading provider of industrial sewing threads, Coats offers a comprehensive product range of threads for use in footwear and leather accessories. Coats’ trilobal embroidery thread range has been specifically developed for use on leather apparel and accessories to embellish and enhance their appeal. The specially designed Opti range of zip fasteners complements Coats threads used in leather apparel and accessories. AOD’s principal Karen MacLeod noted that this partnership between AOD, Coats and the EDB, marks a great example of education, private sector and the government to help the nation; “At AOD, we work very closely with both EDB and Coats to use design to help elevate exports and integrate innovation into industry. With this partnership, we’re hoping to highlight the massive potential of Sri Lankan exports through a captivating fashion show featuring some of our own work paired with local leather accessories. I think this path where design, education, industry and the government works together will be a recipe for success and AOD is very proud to be part of it.” The EDB Leather and Footwear fashion show will be presented in partnership with Coats and AOD today at BMICH to a group of select industry representatives.
