Hirdaramani Group Environmental Sustainability Awards

The Hirdaramani Group recently hosted their first annual ‘Environmental Sustainability Awards’, to recognise and celebrate the work of the teams from factories across the country in implementing the company ‘Sustainability Policy’. This policy was developed as a guideline to be followed by each of the Group’s facilities across Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam in their effort to become greener manufacturers. The awards, which were based on the achievements during the course of 2014, were presented to the facilities that excelled in Conservation of Water – won by Hirdaramani Knit Agalawatte (Mihila), Conservation of Energy – won by Hirdaramani Knit Katunayake, Proper Management of Waste – won by Hirdaramani Woven Kuruwita, and Improvement in Biodiversity Practices – won by Hirdaramani Knit Agalawatte. The main award of the evening for the ‘Most Sustainable Factory – 2014’ was presented to the famed Mihila factory in Agalawatte of the Hirdaramani Knit cluster for its exceptional achievements. Hirdaramani Group Director Arjuna Kuruppu, with many years of experience has spearheaded the Sustainability Division of the Company to drive the Environmental Goals that would take the company to the next level. On his initiative a strategy with 10 core policies and a wide-reaching scope was established three years ago. In addition the company launched an environmental vision. Accordingly under his guidance the Sustainability Division is involved in steering all facilities to become more environmentally friendly. Each facility with it internal sustainability team headed by the General Manager of each unit has worked towards the above goals and vision. This event was organised to appreciate the contributions and effort made by each of these teams to achieve the set goals. Moreover, this event will further encourage all the teams within the group to do more towards the environment as a whole. The Board of Directors in their message have emphasised that ‘these efforts will guide us gradually to prevent, reduce and mitigate any harmful effects on the Environment and achieve our goal of becoming a ‘Greener Organisation’. The Hirdaramani Group’s green journey began with the building of its first eco friendly factory, Mihila, which has the distinction of being the first custom built green apparel factory in the world, as well as the first Carbon Neutral apparel factory in Asia. Using the experience of building and running the Mihila factory, Hirdaramani has been gradually converting all its existing facilities across Sri Lanka into eco-friendly facilities, while all new constructions are built to the LEED standards. Hirdaramani has also implemented its sustainability agenda across its international footprint boasting a total of 12 Green facilities across Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Vietnam.
