By Sarah Hannan The connoisseur of sartorial elegance, KIITO opened its store dedicated for its readymade collection recently at Arcade – Independence Square. Diplomats, celebrities and well-wishers were present as Damith E. Cooray marked another milestone for his award-winning brand. With the apparel sector gathering momentum and the concessions that are brought forth by the Government, more avenues are opening up for entrepreneurs like Cooray. It is only logical that brands such as KIITO join hands local sources and take their businesses to the next level. “I joined hands with Selyn, which is the only certified Fair Trade manufacturer in Sri Lanka for handloom fabrics, which gives an added value for my collection. I am taking Sri Lankan craft internationally while bringing in international brands such as Ermengildo Zegna, Holland and Sherry, and Dormeuil, which are considered to be the most exclusive fabrics for formal suits,” Cooray explained. At present KIITO has a group of 20 skilled tailors who were trained under a Singaporean establishment which was established in the early ’90s. Therefore their craft and workmanship is totally different from other tailors. They work more on the cut and stitching part; however the craft and workmanship goes more on the Singaporean and European tailor made lines. Though KIITO’s target market is predominantly expats and diplomats in Sri Lanka, Cooray stated: “Sri Lankans like to wear vibrant colours and vibrant suits, which is a niche market. This would be a great opportunity for me to promote since the store is located at a prime location in Colombo.” As far as the pricing is concerned, the handloom collection which specialises in jackets starts from Rs. 16,000 while the suits start from Rs. 18,000; “It is a totally personalised service where you can select the fabrics, while we consult you with the cut and design that would bring out your personality.” In 2015 February, Cooray and the award winners from Sri Lanka Fashion and Apparel Awards 2013 will be sent to the UK to work with renowned international fashion designers. This will help them to gain more knowledge about the international fashion industry, whilst taking the artisans and crafts from Sri Lanka to an international platform. The readymade collection is available at Arcade – Independence Square and the store is located on the first floor of the Auditor-General’s Department Building.
