Textured Jersey PLC (TJ), Sri Lanka’s largest manufacturer of knitted fabric, took a pioneering step to support Sri Lanka’s emerging ethical fashion labels. Ethical fashion that utilises industrial fabric waste and trims, hence preventing from this waste going into landfills and the environment, is a dominant trend in the current world market.
Parallel to the global movement to protect our planet from peril by preventing further damage to nature, ethical fashion is supported by progressive industrial giants everywhere.
As the leader in manufacturing knit fabric in Sri Lanka, TJ took on supporting this cause with local ethical fashion labels. Starting this initiative at Sri Lanka Design Festival 2012 last month, TJ facilitated the supply of fabric leftovers to the two popular Sri Lankan designer labels, ‘Redcocoon’ and ‘House of Lonali’ to produce brand new fashion collections.
Both fashion labels are eco-friendly labels that produce sustainable clothing by using only recycled fabrics and industry fabric waste. Textured Jersey’s effort with ‘Redcocoon,’ (Sri Lanka’s first sustainable clothing line), mainly utilised reclaimed fabric and trims from TJ.
The label ‘House of Lonali’ used TJ fabric leftovers to produce a collection of crochet toppers and pullovers produced in knitting centres in Mallavi and Mullaitivu, as well as garments made from handloom weaves using some of the waste yarn and cut off salvages of Textured Jersey.
These fantastic collections will be joining the stream of commercial fashion, supported by Textured Jersey, encouraging Sri Lankan consumers to be more conscientious about their fashion purchases, and their impact on the environment.
Textured Jersey employs one of Sri Lanka’s most sophisticated production facilities for the manufacture of knitted fabrics for the intimate apparel and sportswear industries. A specialist in the manufacture of high quality, weft-knitted and dyed stretch fabrics, Textured Jersey is a supplier for top-notch international brands of the calibre of Victoria’s Secret, Marks & Spencer and Intimissimi.
The two major shareholders of the company are Brandix, Sri Lanka’s single largest apparel exporter and Pacific Textiles, a Hong Kong based company with one of the largest manufacturing facilities in China. TJ initiated their support to local ethical fashion brands at the Sri Lanka Design Festival 2012 in November, which is a two year and continuing partnership where Textured Jersey is the official fabric partner.
