In yet another exhilarating ending to the All-Island School Games Netball Championship 2016, sponsored by Airtel, Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala continued their winning streak yet again this year by securing the overall title of Airtels’ Netball Champions of 2016 in both Under 19 and 17 age groups.
The Under 19 Familians were able to do so by beating Presbyterian BV, Dehiwala (31-23) who showed great grit in the first half of the game while the youngsters beat Hillwood College, Kandy (21-12).
In the first semifinal between the Familians from Kurunegala and Kalutara in the Under 15 age group, Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala secured an easy win against its sister school while Maliyadeva BV, Kurunegala beat Visakha Vidyalaya to come into the finals. Maliyadeva BV proved to be the better team in the North Western Province as they beat HFC, Kurunegala 14-12 in the finals.
Hillwood College, Kandy was the only school in the Central Province that was able to secure a place in the finals in the Under 17 age group as they beat Visakha Vidyalaya by two points while Girls High School, Kandy lost to Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala in the semifinals.
Sacred Heart Convent’s dream of entering into the finals was again shattered by Holy Family Convent, Kurunegala who beat them by a large margin (33-08) to meet Presbyterian BV who showed some brilliant skills to be the only school in the Western Province to come into the finals. This is also the first time that the Presbyterians were able to achieve this result.
The tournament which was conducted by the Departments of Health, Physical Education and Sports of the Ministry of Education, was graced by Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, who was also the chief guest of the evening.
