The year concerned was a year of recovery for companies no matter which industry sector they operate in.  We were indeed encouraged to see how many had propelled with bold strategies and still stayed consistent with sustainability commitments.

We received a higher number of applications than ever before this year, with submissions covering several key sectors such as Agriculture, Banking & Finance, Construction, Infrastructure and Logistics, Knowledge services, Manufacturing, Retail, and other - a definite sign of steady progress and growing interest in Environmental and Social Governance.  Submissions of Sustainability projects spanned a wide spectrum, addressing environmental, social, and economic concerns. Some initiatives focus on internal changes, while others aim to make a positive impact on connected communities and society as a whole.

A collective observation of Understanding Multidimensional Vulnerabilities: Impact on People of Sri Lanka (MVI), the UNDP Regional Human Development Report 2024 (HDI) and the World Economic Forum, Global Risks Perception Survey 2022-2023 indicate that Sri Lanka is in a polycrisis. Addressing the contemporary polycrisis; Firstly, the economic crisis, individual debt status and climate risk within the country calls for the necessity of the alignment of sector-wise innovation with strong cross-sector collaboration.  Sustainability is a key driver in resolving the polycrisis. Secondly, keen anticipation and mitigation of long-term and short-term corporate risk in a sustainable manner along with a just transition to renewable energy and circularity would ensure economic viability - a shift in thought leadership and strategy is therefore pivotal. Finally, recalibration of the corporate landscape through capacity building, reduction of informal employment and inclusivity within the workforce to prioritise development and economic recovery.

The evaluators applaud the companies who have taken courageous steps, in partnership with a variety of stakeholders, to prioritise issues where they have a particular responsibility or where the need or potential impact of their intervention is most catalytic. Many projects have emerged from a culture of innovation, problem-solving, and employee engagement fostered within these companies. We applaud those companies that have not only shared their innovations and best practices but have also developed tools and resources for the broader industry and society to benefit from.
