The Government has taken steps to create 100 Wi-Fi zones in the capital city of Colombo as a first step in its countrywide program of providing free Wi-Fi for the public.

The Colombo Municipal Council has so far initiated setting up 20 Wi-Fi zones within the city, and more than 10 Wi-Fi zones are already running.

This project has been implemented as a concept of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. “This will make our city tech-friendly and make our public a technologically advanced citizenry,” the Policy Development Office under the Ministry of National Policies and Economic Affairs said.

The machine will provide the public an in-built Wi-Fi as they are frequently engaged in browsing the internet in today’s growing technological world.

In addition, it includes a facility for the public to charge their mobile phones while they are on the street and a trash can which accommodate 75 cubic liters of waste at a time. Steps are also being taken to identify the remaining 80 locations within the city of Colombo. This Project is planned to be implemented in Matara, Galle, Kandy and other cities of Sri Lanka in the near future.
