Engineering students from Queen’s University Belfast set a new world record with a 100 ft footbridge made from Meccano on Saturday (19 September).

The temporary structure has been built across the city’s Clarendon Dock and was unveiled at a public event.

“Something like this doesn’t just happen overnight, there’s 11,000 pieces of Meccano in this, there’s 17,000 nuts and bolts, over 4,000 hours of time has gone into building this,” said Professor Trevor Whittaker from the university.

Representatives from Guinness World Records were on hand to confirm the world record for the largest ever Meccano construction.

It was built by a group of civil engineering students and local schoolchildren.
