Under the program of setting up Free Wi-Fi in public places, the 79th Wi-Fi zone will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Elpitiya in the Galle District today. The Prime Minister launched the program on 30 March with the first zone set up at the Colombo Fort Railway Station. In addition to the Prime Minister, Mass Media and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Gayantha Karunatilleke and ICTA officials will be among those participating in today’s inauguration at the Central Bust Stand at Elpitiya. Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera said that setting up Free Wi-Fi zones would be accelerated as these fulfill a long-felt need of the people and in particular the rural youth. Proceeding further with this effort, steps have been taken to set up these zones in every Divisional Secretariat in the island. ICTA is spearheading this program in consultation with all stakeholders including fixed, mobile and telecommunication service providers. One thousand free Wi-Fi zones are scheduled to be set up island-wide in the coming months.
