Asela B. Rekawa appointed Marine Environment Protection Authority Chairman

Defence Counsel Asela B. Rekawa has been appointed as the Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) by Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.

The appointment came into effect yesterday and the appointment has also been approved by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Before taking on the appointment, Rekawa served two years (2016-2018) as the Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket and now serving as a member of its Constitutional Committee, a Member of the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka’s oldest sport and recreation club, the Gymkhana Club, and served most recently as a member of the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Board – representing Sri Lanka in St. Petersburg, Russia at the Inter-Regional Conference on setting up a Nuclear Position. Educated at S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia, and graduated from the Sri Lanka Law College in 2000, he is an Alumnus of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and currently reading for his Masters in Criminal Justice Administration at the Open University of Colombo. He is also a Life Member of the Sri Lanka Bar Association and a member of the International Bar Association, serving on its Committees for Pro Bono, Criminal Law and the Asia Pacific Regional Forum.

Having developed a keen interest in the fields of Human Rights, Transitional Justice and the role of Civil Society in shaping the generations to come, he has invested his spare time in the academic research and pursuit of Transitional Justice and Post-Conflict Reconstruction and has published several opinion pieces on said subject, whilst continuing to conduct research thereto.
