Due to the recent civil unrest, the Government had to ban social media in Sri Lanka.
While appreciating Government’s quick response and various measures taken to avoid spreading violence across the country, CSSL requests the Government to restore the normalcy for the social media use immediately since the situation is now under control.
Any form of continuation of this ban has many negative aspects to business and society, and therefore the CSSL stance is that the digital curfew should be lifted immediately and completely.
The CSSL is proposing to the Government to open a dialogue with key stakeholders as to how such situations can be better managed in the future, and identify what processes can be implemented to have a more conducive and peaceful digital environment.
The CSSL expects to play a key role in that process, and is currently in the process of gathering the technical experts together to formulate ways of better managing social media whilst ensuring freedom of speech.
