Cabinet nod for express courier service of driving licenses, vehicle number plates

• Program to be implemented with Postal Dept.

A proposal to undertake the delivery of diving licenses and vehicle number plates to applicants through a ‘Speed Post’ courier service was approved by Cabinet on Monday.

A proposal was submitted by Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge and will be implemented in collaboration with the Postal Department to deliver them to an applicant’s home under the express courier service of the Postal Department. The Minister informed the Cabinet that under the current system, members of  the public face a great deal of inconvenience and have to visit the Registration of Motor Vehicle Department several times to get a driving license or number plate.The Minister also noted that there seems to be some delay in sending new driver’s licenses by registered mail to applications and hence the express courier service will ensure there are no such delays.
