The Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday approved the importation of 25,000 tons of Urea fertiliser for the 2023 Yala season.
Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Banduala Gunawardena said the decision was taken after considering taking a count on Urea fertiliser remaining with the two State-run fertiliser companies and the private sector for the Yala season of 2023.
“It has been found that around 25,000 tons of Urea fertiliser should be further imported to cater to the demand for the 2023 Yala harvesting season,” he said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing held yesterday.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved to import 60% of the relevant Urea amount through the Ceylon Fertiliser Company and 40% of that amount via the Colombo Commercial Fertilisers.
The proposal to this effect tabled by Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
