The Cabinet has given approval to relocate the prison in Welikada and convert the area to a modern township.
At present Welikada prison encompasses 42 acres.
The Government is to relocate the prison in Millewa, Horana within a 220-acre land area.
A statement from the Government Information said considering even the future requirements, it has been planned to construct a new prison premises in Horana while transferring the Welikada land to the Urban Development Authority so that it can be provided on long-term lease to local and foreign investors to carry out development projects.
Cabinet approved the resolutions in this regard included in the joint memorandum submitted by Prime Minister as Urban Development and Housing Minister and Minister of Justice.
