Engineers’ fraternity donates Rs. 9 m to President’s Fund to fight COVID-19

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL), under the leadership of IESL President Eng. (Prof.) S.B.S. Abayakoon, along with the Public Service Engineers Union, National Water Supply and Drainage Board Engineers Union and Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union, has donated Rs. 9 million to the COVID-19 Healthcare and Social Security Fund.

The fund was established by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for fighting the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Secretary to the President Dr. P.B. Jayasundera received funds at the Presidential Secretariat on 30 March from the representatives of said bodies. 

IESL is the apex body representing engineers employed in Sri Lanka and overseas and established by an act of Parliament, having a membership of over 25,000 engineers and engineering undergraduates. The contributions included Rs. 1 million from the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, Rs. 3 million from the Public Service Engineers Union and Rs. 2.5 million from National Water Supply and Drainage Board Engineers Union. On a separate occasion, the Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union will donate Rs. 2.5 million to the President’s fund.

Dr. Jayasundera, a top official of the GOSL, who has been involved in the economic development challenges of the country for a long period of time, expressed his gratitude toward the engineers’ fraternity of Sri Lanka for their continuous contribution to the economic and social development of the country, especially in the wake of the current crisis situation faced by our country.
