The European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (ECCSL) recently concluded its Annual General Meeting (AGM), marking a significant milestone in the Chamber’s journey as it enters a new chapter of growth and strategic development.

During the meeting, John Wilson was appointed as the new President, with Mario Stubbs named Vice President, ushering in a fresh leadership team to guide the Chamber’s efforts to support European businesses in Sri Lanka and foster stronger trade and investment relations between Europe and Sri Lanka.

In his address, newly-appointed President Wilson expressed his gratitude for the trust and support shown by the Chamber’s members. He acknowledged the challenges of the past but emphasised that the Chamber is now entering a period of growth, with increased momentum and a strategic focus on serving its members more effectively.

“I am honoured and privileged to stand before you today as the newly elected President of the ECCSL,” said Wilson. “We are building momentum, focusing on strategic growth, and positioning ourselves to be of even greater service to our members. This is a crucial time for us, and with your continued support, I believe we will achieve great things together.”

Wilson outlined several key initiatives the Chamber will focus on in the coming year, including:

n Regular breakfast or evening meetings: These gatherings will provide members with the opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and stay informed about the latest developments in the business world, fostering meaningful networking within both European and Sri Lankan business communities.

n EuroLink magazine: The Chamber will continue to publish EuroLink, its trade and commerce magazine, which serves as an important resource for sharing news, trends, and insights on trade, investment, and business developments in both Europe and Sri Lanka.

n Quarterly EU regulatory roundtables: These roundtables will focus on key European regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), the Deforestation Regulation, the Critical Minerals Regulation, and the Textile Labelling Regulation. Staying informed about these regulatory changes is vital for members involved in trade with Europe. “The Chamber is working closely with relevant organisations to ensure that our members and associates have access to the most up-to-date information and expert guidance on these important regulatory changes,” Wilson noted.

  • Membership growth: Efforts will be made to attract new members from both Sri Lanka and Europe, ensuring that the network remains vibrant and diverse.
  • Helpdesk contracts: The Chamber will continue its collaboration with European Business Councils, the trade desks of European Embassies, and other trade organisations to provide essential support to members doing business in both Europe and Sri Lanka.
  • Enhanced communication and visibility: The Chamber will enhance its digital presence, ensuring consistent, clear communication with its members through digital platforms and social media.
  • Advocacy: The ECCSL will increase its advocacy efforts to represent the interests of European businesses in Sri Lanka. As a key voice of the European business community in Sri Lanka, the Chamber has a responsibility to represent its members’ interests, whether advocating for favourable policies or addressing challenges that may arise. “I am confident that, with your continued support, we will achieve all of these goals and more,” said Wilson. “The challenges ahead are significant, but the opportunities are even greater. Together, we can build a stronger, more prosperous future for our members and for the business communities we represent.”

The President also took the opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding contributions of retiring Board members, thanking them for their dedication and service to the Chamber. These individuals will continue to lend their expertise and guidance as members of the Chamber’s Advisory Board.

Special recognition was given to Stubbs, the newly-appointed Vice President, for his leadership and vision in shaping the future of the Chamber. “His leadership will play a pivotal role in steering the Chamber towards its goals in the years to come,” said Wilson.

The ECCSL remains committed to fostering a stronger business ecosystem for European companies in Sri Lanka, promoting sustainable trade and supporting the exchange of ideas and knowledge between European and Sri Lankan industries.
