With renewable energy emerging as a vital need to address mounting national and global energy requirements, the Federation of Renewable Energy Developers (FRED) held its inaugural meeting on 22 July.
The FRED, which is an Approved Association of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, will provide a unifying voice for the renewable energy sector in Sri Lanka, promoting the promotion and adoption of advanced, efficient, and sustainable technology and policies that will promote and benefit the country’s long-term sustainable energy requirements and goals.
The federation will comprise the renewable energy industry associations including the Small Hydro Power Developers Association, the Grid Connected Solar Power Association, Wind Power Association and the Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka, comprising of over 750Mw of operational projects connected to national grid as well as other industry stakeholders including investors, developers, science and technology professionals, etc.
With the wealth of expertise and experience at its disposal, the FRED aims to constructively contribute towards the development of a sustainable framework for renewable energy generation, while also ensuring Sri Lanka meets its international commitments towards climate change mitigation, and sustainable development goals.
In its capacity as an apex industry representative, the FRED will be well placed to provide policy and technical guidance to relevant Ministries, state agencies, consultative committees and other development organisations, as Sri Lanka pursues a target of 70% renewable energy by 2030 in line with the goal of zero carbon by 2050 as mandated by the Paris Agreement.
WKV Hydro Technics Ltd. CEO Thusitha Peiris was elected as President of the FRED for 2022/23 and WindForce PLC MD Manjula Perera, was elected as Vice-President. WindForce PLC CEO Lasith Wimalasena and Solar Ray Energy Ltd. MD Chamil Silva were elected as Secretary and Treasurer respectively.
Council Members elected for 2022/23 are Brio Ltd. Director Warna Dahanayake, Senok Group of Companies Founder and President Noel Selvanayagam, Ceylex Renewables Ltd. CEO Sameera Ganegoda, Geotech Ltd. Director Parakrama Jayasinghe and Eco Power Group CEO/ Director Firdowsy Ismail representing the respective renewable energy development associations
