The Cabinet of Ministers this week approved to call for proposals from investors interested in starting and maintaining clay-related industry via the lease of the underutilised Weuda Tile Factory belonging to the Lanka Ceramic Corporation.
It was approved to lease the State-owned tile factory with a land extent of nine acres, one roof and 31 perches to an eligible investor selected following a competitive process and evaluation of technical and financial proposals submitted.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers at its meeting on Monday.
The operations of the Weuda Tile Factory, in Mawathagama, Kurunegala District came to a standstill in 2010, due to the difficulty to supply raw material. However, in 2017 the factory was handed over to Sri Lanka Navy to manufacture bricks needed to build Sanda Hiru Seya (Stupa) in Anuradhapura, but that too was halted in the same year.
