IESL Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee public seminar on Thursday

• Dr. Shamil Appathurai to speak on ‘5G is here…..Where are you’

Next public lecture organised by Mechanical Engineering Sectional Committee of IESL will be held on 30 May at 5:30 p.m. at Wimalasurendra Auditorium, Institute of Engineer Sri Lanka, 120/15, Wijerama Mawatha Colombo 7.

The topic is ‘5G is here…..Where are you?’ by Dr. Shamil Appathurai.

5th Generation networks are the next generation of mobile internet connectivity, offering faster speeds and more reliable connections on smartphones and other devices than ever before.

The 5G technology is being deployed commercially at present. As with anything new it is greeted with scepticism. 

From technology nitty-gritties to new business opportunities, a mash-up of the 5G world will be discussed to spark creativity in engineers and entrepreneurs and ready themselves for yet another digital revolution.

Dr. Shamil Appathurai, has over two decades experience in the telecommunications and ICT field. He is currently leading Mobitel Ltd.’s Network Strategy and Transformation, and is an advisor and lecturer at the Sri Lanka Technology Campus (SLTC). He was formerly a Design and Development Consultant at British Telecommunications Plc. (BT) in the UK. He was also Post Graduate Research Fellow at University College London, UK. Dr. Shamil has received many awards and scholarships based on his research in telecommunications, including winning the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s Annual Innovations in Engineering Award in 2007. He also led consortium of researchers from Germany, Belgium, Ireland and the UK, in a project funded by the European Union on developing Long-Reach Passive Optical Networks. He has also authored or co-authored over 20 publications in international conferences and peer-reviewed journals.
