The International Electronics Manufacturing Association (IPC), in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), and Sri Lanka Electronic and Electrical Manufacturers and Exporters Association (SLEEMEA), organised a Wire Harness Competition and a technical session on “Wire Harness” on 4 April, at the DHPL 3rd Floor Auditorium.
IPC is a global organisation that supports Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Electronic Manufacturing Services (EMS), Printed Circuit Board (PCB) manufacturers, Cable and Wire Harness Manufacturers, and suppliers to the electronics industry in order to improve the manufacturing of electronics and to build electronics better.
More than 80 participants from Sri Lankan Electronic and Electrical companies attended the Wire Harness Competition and technical session on Wire Harness Best Practices. The Wire Harness Competition was held in four batches after a brief introduction by IPC India Master IPC Trainer Krishna Kumar. The program was coupled with interactive lectures and hands-on practical workshops. Those who participated for the competition, received a valuable certificate from IPC. The participants gained an understanding about IPC standards’ requirements, assembly functionality, proper soldering and assembly techniques, assembly procedure adherence, and overall product quality requirements in wire harness assembly using cutting-edge tools.
Cable and wire harnesses are a vital part of an electronic and electrical manufacturing process. It is the key component for connecting the printed circuit board connection with other PCBs or to external circuitry. The scope of the cable assembly industry is broad, encompassing various types of cable assemblies such as custom cable assemblies, wire harnesses, and electromechanical assemblies, among others. IPC Global Cable Assembly Market is forecasted to grow reaching nearly $ 243.40 billion by 2029. The market size for cable assembly is expected to witness significant growth Asia Pacific Region due to the increasing adoption of advanced technologies such as 5G, IoT, and AI, which require high-speed and reliable data transmission. Moreover, the growing trend towards miniaturisation and modularisation of electronic devices is expected to further boost the demand for cable assembly solutions and boost the bottom-line of the companies.
Aerospace, defence, transport, automotive and EV, medical, telecommunications and ICT, infrastructure and power, industrial and railways, robotics and automation, are some of the sectors that rely on wire harnesses to maximise efficiency.
IPC Vice President – South East Asia, India, Middle East and Africa Gaurab Majumdar and IPC Regional Manager – South India, Saudi Arabia, and Sri Lanka Vittal Vatar welcomed the gathering while Master IPC Trainer Krishna Kumar conducted the competition and the technical session. A presentation about Japan Unix was also made by Japan Unix India Head Rajesh K. Dogar. EDB Director General Champika. D. Dharmasena participated as the Chief Guest for the occasion. Addl. Director General – Development Anoma Premathilake expressed the importance of the Sri Lankan Electronic and Electrical sector and exports. Sri Lanka Electronic Manufacturers and Exporters Association (SLEMEA) Chairman Gamini Ranasinghe, a large number of company representatives, and EDB officials were present at the event.
The event was the first of its kind in Sri Lanka and was very significant for Sri Lanka’s electronic and electrical Industry. The country’s electronic and electrical Industry has grown steadily thanks to government initiatives and support, as well as for the skilled workforce and favourable business environment. Due to its advantageous geographic position and highly educated workforce, notably in engineering and technology, Sri Lanka has the potential to become a significant player in the global electronic and electrical Market.
While continuing this endeavour with IPC India, EDB is planning to introduce short term/medium term courses in collocation with IPC India and SLEMEA for school leavers and Vocational Educational Institutes to attract more skilled workers for the sector in the near future for the export drive.
