Interactive Session on “Business Opportunities and Experience Sharing between Sri Lanka and Korea”

Sri Lanka – Korea Business Council was organised an interactive session on Business Opportunities and Experience Sharing between Sri Lanka and Korea on 07 September 2022 at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Auditorium. 

Ambassador of the Republic Korea in Sri Lanka Santhush Woonjin JEONG, graced the session as the Chief Guest. The Guest speakers were Additional Secretary to the Foreign Affairs Ministry and former Ambassador for South Korea Prof. A. Saj U. Mendis; Sri Lanka Export Development Board Chairman Suresh De Mel; and Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Director-General Renuka M. Weerakone. 

Magnificent Korean Organisations; Korea Businessman Association (KBA), Korean Resident Association (KRA), Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) participated in this session.  

Ambassador of the Republic Korea in Sri Lanka Santhush Woonjin JEONG stated that: “Since 1977, Korea and Sri Lanka have shared a robust bilateral partnership based on numerous avenues including economic, trade, investment, labour, cultural and education cooperation. As we celebrate the 45th Anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, I sincerely hope that this celebratory year unlocks a renewed, rejuvenated and remarkable chapter of bilateral ties for the next 45 years.”

“Korea, once an aid recipient country has now joined the ranks of ‘donor’ countries and was recorded as the 10th largest economy and the seventh largest exporter in the world last year. ‘Knowledge sharing’ is a key objective of Korea’s international cooperation. Since 2012, Korea has considered Sri Lanka as a strategic development partner country and has continuously engaged with Sri Lanka to share knowledge and development experiences of Korea. 

“Korea and Sri Lanka share similar outward oriented, export-led industrialisation policies. Korea has invested in fostering high value-added manufacturing industries and improving the Research and Development capabilities,” he said. 

Board of Investment of Sri Lanka Director-General Renuka M. Weerakone spoke on the Investment incentives in Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka Export Development Board Chairman Suresh De Mel spoke on Export Incentives for Sri Lankan Companies. 

Additional Secretary to the Foreign Affairs Ministry and former Ambassador for South Korea Prof. A. Saj U. Mendis shared his experience in dealing with Korean Business Enterprises. The participants acquired a great opportunity to interact with speakers and the invitees.
