The Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA) in collaboration with the ABK & AOTS Alumni Association (Thailand) and the Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR) has organised a study tour titled ‘Post-Harvest Technology Program’ in Thailand to enhance knowledge and practical skills of planters on the latest technologies involved in harvesting, planting, packing, and delivery methods associated with agriculture.

Applications are invited from executives, senior managers, professionals and owners of harvesting companies associated with the plantation sector for this program, which will be conducted in Thailand from 22 to 28 March.

From ancient times, Thailand has been an agrarian economy and is reputed for exporting various crops worldwide. Whilst rice is their most important crop, the export of tropical fruits such as pineapple, mango, durian, etc. have gained significant ground. Thai cultivators have gained knowledge and skills mainly through trial and error and developed well-tested strategies and technologies for planting, harvesting, packing and delivery. Their efforts have helped to establish Thailand as a leading agricultural economy in the world.

This study tour program will enable Sri Lankan harvesters to study the procedures and technologies used in Thailand and contribute more effectively towards the island’s economic growth. Participants will be able to visit various successful companies which process fruits and vegetables in Thailand and taught to think creatively in formulating innovative solutions to issues facing their respective organisations, making Sri Lankan plantation companies more effective and efficient in the sphere of ‘harvesting’. Participants are to learn under the supervision of reputed lecturers of TISTR, who are keen to train them on techniques characteristic of thriving Thai companies. This will be complemented by field visits to such as Thai Agro Exchange Co. Ltd., the biggest wholesale fruit and vegetable market in Southeast Asia, the Post-Harvest Laboratory and Food Innovation Service Plant at TISTR and Swift Co. Ltd.

JASTECA, which is an alumni society of the Association for Overseas Technical Co-operation for Sustainability, also organises training courses in Japan. Further information on JASTECA or its seminars can be obtained from the JASTECA office on 0112393566/ 0778582992 or email [email protected]
