The Japan-Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA), will hold a webinar titled ‘Be an Effective Director’ on Tuesday 26 October.

The two-hour webinar is aimed at giving practical advice to existing directors and those aspiring to be directors, as well as to company secretaries and even office bearers of associations, on how they could improve the effectiveness of their boards.

The contents will cover the role and tasks of the board, the structuring and ideal composition of the board, how to handle the performance dimension and the conformance dimension, new director induction and the initiation pack, focus on different functions on a roster, ensuring correct record of proceedings, etc., and would be an excellent webinar for directors of State Owned Enterprises too who may not have had the experience of being on boards previously. Many directors of private unlisted companies have already registered, and registrations may close early if there is a large number.

Resource person Sunil G. Wijesinha, a Past President of JASTECA has extensive experience on many boards since he was first appointed to a listed company board in 1989. He has been a Chairman and a Director of several Government corporations and boards and has been able to run them and contribute effectively. He has served as a Director on many company boards covering a variety of industries such as manufacturing, banking, airline, services, consultancy, dairy, plantations, trading, finance, real estate and automobile.

Presently he serves as the Chairman of two listed companies. He has refined his board management skills after undergoing a comprehensive course on directorship in Sweden, a course in Malaysia and a course in Sri Lanka conducted by the Swedish Institute of Directors.

JASTECA said recent free webinars on ‘Japanese Practices and Quality Circles’ conducted by Wijesinha were a huge success with over 300 participants being registered.
