JCI Sri Lanka recently marked both a significant revival and the induction of its new leadership team. The event brought together a distinguished audience of industry leaders, policymakers, and professionals, showcasing the organisation’s commitment to leadership, professional development, and global engagement.

The event highlighted the remarkable journey of JCI Sri Lanka, from its inception in 1954 by Sam Wimalasekara and 25 young visionaries at the 80 Club in Colombo to its recognition as a ‘Potential New Organisation’ at the JCI World Congress in Taiwan. This resurgence was made possible by the tireless efforts of JCI Senate Sri Lanka, led by Sen Malik Cader, whose leadership was pivotal in orchestrating this historic occasion.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp, followed by a parade of chapter Presidents and the presence of past JCI officers and national Presidents. Attendees observed a solemn tribute to departed Jaycees, reinforcing the organisation’s deep-rooted legacy of service, while the recitation of the JCI creed, mission, and Vision reaffirmed the shared principles that drive its members.

Leadership transition and strategic vision

A key highlight of the evening was the installation of the JCI Sri Lanka National President. APDC Councillor JCI Wilson Chu presided over the installation, reinforcing the organisation’s global network and governance structure.

In his inaugural address, the newly appointed National President, JC Sandun Weerasinghe, outlined a strategic roadmap centred on the theme ‘Empower – Engage – Excel’. “Our focus is on supporting dynamic leadership and sustainable development, ensuring that JCI Sri Lanka remains at the forefront of professional excellence and social responsibility,” he stated. Joining him in this mission are JC Tamasha Fernando as the National Secretary General, JC Thariq Nazeer as the National Treasurer, JC Thathsara Rajapaksa as the National Director for Membership Development and Training, and JC Shamshad Nizamdeen as the Director of Business and Entrepreneurship.

The event welcomed esteemed dignitaries, including Chief Guest Justice A.H.M.D. Nawaz, who emphasised the importance of leadership and service to society. “The principles upheld by JCI are essential in today’s fast-evolving business and governance landscape,” he remarked.

Among the distinguished Guests of Honour was 1989 World President JCI Senator Isfahani Sameen, whose global perspective on JCI’s vision inspired attendees. APDC Councillor JC Wilson Chu from JCI Macao also acknowledged the regional significance of Sri Lanka’s re-emergence as a key player in the JCI network. The presence of APDC Development Officers from JCI Cambodia, JCI Bangladesh, JCI Mongolia, JCI Macao, and JCI Japan further reinforced the international camaraderie within the organisation.

A series of awards and special recognitions were presented to individuals and chapters for their contributions to JCI’s mission. APDC Councillor Wilson Chu highlighted the importance of collaboration in achieving long-term organisational goals, noting, “When we come together with a shared vision, we achieve what seems impossible.”

The evening transitioned into a networking and professional discourse session, reinforcing the spirit of collaboration that defines JCI’s leadership philosophy. Concluding the formal proceedings, President JCI Colombo Mid-Town Annya Gunasekera delivered a vote of thanks, reflecting on the evening’s key takeaways.

The evening culminated in the highly anticipated JCI Gala Night, a vibrant celebration filled with lively entertainment and a strong sense of fellowship. The Gala Night was organised by JCI Colombo Central under the leadership of JC Dharini Seneviratne. Members and guests celebrated shared accomplishments and strengthened bonds for the future. As JCI Sri Lanka embarks on this exciting new chapter, its story serves as both a beacon of hope and a reminder that vision, perseverance, and unity are the key ingredients to achieving a brighter tomorrow.

With passionate leadership and a commitment to service, JCI Sri Lanka is poised to make a lasting impact. As JC Sandun Weerasinghe aptly put it, “Leadership isn’t about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.” With such leadership in place, the future looks bright for JCI Sri Lanka.
