As an importer of LPG to the country, LAUGFS Gas said yesterday it follows the standards published by the Sri Lanka Standards Institute and LAUGFS Gas PLC has its LPG specifications accordingly.
LAUGFS Gas has never released LPG with low standards as declared by the media.
Following is LAUGFS’s statement:
“The composition of LPG is varied according to the temperature zones, and in a range of Propane/Butane: 30%/70%, which is used in Sri Lanka. 100% Propane is used mostly in ice-forming cold countries. LAUGFS Gas uses LPG with average composition of Propane/Butane: 30%/70% in Sri Lanka. LAUGFS Gas has never released LPG with composition of Propane/Butane: 50%/50%. “There is no truth in the statements made by the media that LAUGFS Gas violates the standards stipulated by Sri Lanka Standards Institute. It is the responsibility of gas companies to ensure the standards of LP Gas cylinders and LAUGFS Gas ensures the same properly and uses the standards stipulated by Sri Lanka Standard Institute.
“It is the duty of the Sri Lanka Standards Institute and other relevant State institutions to define the composition of ingredients and properties of LPG and monitor compliance.” LAUGFS said: “On certain occasions, the media had declared LPG-related incidents are caused by bursts of LPG cylinders, but in reality, there is no single incident of such burst of LPG cylinders in recent history in Sri Lanka. Most of the incidents are caused by a lack of knowledge by LPG consumers and improper usage.
“Some media and personnel have declared the opinion of the LPG tank as a bomb and it is a misleading concept. This is known by technical experts who are knowledgeable on the behaviour of LPG. “It is revealed by LAUGFS Gas and other State institutions in their investigations that the root cause for domestic and industrial LPG-related incidents is the lack of awareness of proper usage of LP Gas and malpractices followed.
“A process of making consumers aware by conducting programs and by distributing leaflets is practiced by LAUGFS Gas all over the country. It will be highly supportive to the society to protect themselves from LP Gas incidents if the State institutions and media implement and effectively contribute to such awareness programs.”
