In 1997, an important strategic collaboration took place between two leading commercial business establishments – Maclaren’s Holdings Limited and Alliance Finance Company PLC – which launched a new business venture; Macbertan.
Macbertan pioneered the manufacture of expanded polyethylene foam products and polyethylene air bubble sheets in Sri Lanka, marketing its prestigious product range of McFoam, McFoil, McFoil Ultra, and McWrap, which quickly became popular brand names.
These products have a wide range of applications and are primarily used for thermal and impact insulation. With increased demand for products both locally and internationally, the company relocated its production processes to a state-of-the-art 30,000 sq.ft. factory complex in Ja-Ela by the middle of the year 2000.
As part of its expansion program to diversify Macbertan’s product portfolio, the company expanded its production line by introducing high-quality ABL and PBL tubes manufactured in Sri Lanka. The plant now manufactures flexible aluminium and plastic laminated tubes for the cosmetics, toothpaste, pharmaceutical, and food industries.
Macbertan is the first plastic processing company in Sri Lanka to be awarded with EMS 14001:2004 and
OHSAS 18001:2007 by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution. The Sri Lanka Standards Institution also certified Macbertan with ISO 9001:2008 quality standards and ISO 50001:2011 energy management system certification. Macbertan is also Sri Lanka’s first plastic processing company to receive all four international certifications from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.
The 25th anniversary was celebrated to recognise and appreciate the workforce, which has grown to include more than 150 employees.
Moving on with ethical practices in business, Macbertan has been actively involved in various CSR projects in the past two decades, adding value to the communities it operates in.
Macbertan has made investments to upgrade machinery to produce high quality products for its customers as part of the board’s business diversification plans and in order to fulfil the company’s vision of being the nation’s premier insulation and roofing solutions provider. As a successful leader in the Sri Lankan business arena, the company believes that all of these innovations are the result of its dedication to quality. Macbertan is prepared to face the challenges of the next decade as a leader in the country’s industrial business sector.
