NSBM Green University Vice Chancellor Prof. E.A. Weerasinghe has been bestowed with the prestigious Most Outstanding Citizen 2024 (MOC Awards) by Lions International, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to society.
The award was presented amidst the grandeur of the 19th Annual District Convention of Lions International District 306 A1 - Sri Lanka, held on 9 June at Hotel Galadari in Colombo.
Most Outstanding Citizen 2024 (MOC Awards) of Lions International District 306 A1 - Sri Lanka is awarded under the theme “Exceptional Contribution to Society”, to recognise and honour individuals and organisations who have rendered exceptional, invaluable services or actions which have benefitted Sri Lankan society at large. Prof. Weerasinghe has earned this distinguished award for his truly exceptional, sustained contribution, which provides inspiration for others, has influenced change, and has made an impact and demonstrable contribution to the community.
Prof. E.A. Weerasinghe’s journey to this pinnacle of recognition has been marked by numerous visionary initiatives and ground-breaking endeavours. His extensive career spans both academia and management, with significant roles such as senior lecturer and head of departments at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. A major milestone in Prof. Weerasinghe’s career came in 2005 when he was appointed Director General of NIBM. Under his exceptional leadership, NIBM underwent a remarkable transformation, evolving into a modern, thriving institution within just five years. Catering to the need for educational opportunities for children across the island, Prof. Weerasinghe expanded NIBM’s regional branch network, opening new centres in Galle and Matara.
Pioneering a visionary concept, he foresighted NSBM Green University, which became a ground-breaking reality in 2016. Operating as a self-financed institution, NSBM makes a significant contribution to the nation by producing graduates who strengthen the local economy. With over 18,000 graduates produced to date and currently hosting more than 13,000 students, NSBM continues to make significant strides under Prof. Weerasinghe’s guidance.
