A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the National Craft Council and the Sri Lanka Postal Department to sell locally made handicrafts online was signed this week.
The initiative expects to create an online digital platform to sell handicrafts made by local craftsmen to local and international markets. The Sri Lanka Postal Department will deliver these handicrafts on this digital platform through its Expedited Mail Service, which is currently operative in 67 destinations in 53 countries.
The new system will expand the market for the local craftsmen while earning foreign exchange for the country.
The MoU was signed under the patronage of Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma. Postmaster General Ranjith Ariyaratne and Chairman of the National Craft Council Sampath Arahapola participated.
Handicrafts manufactured by craftsmen who have registered with the National Craft Council will be sold under the ‘Lakshilpa’ brand name. Handicrafts will be bought from five Lakshilpa emporiums that have been set up under the National Craft Council.
The initiative will be formally launched on 22 November at 3 p.m. at Water’s Edge in Battaramulla.
