Peliyagoda Manning Market to open by Nov.

  • Opening planned to coincide with President’s first year in office
  • Two-acre Pettah Manning Market will be housed in 15 acres in Peliyagoda
  • Over 1,100 shops with all facilities will make up new market

The Peliyagoda Manning Market will be declared open by mid-November to coincide with the first anniversary of the election of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The upcoming opening was revealed by Ministry of Urban Development and Housing, Secretary Sirinimal Perera when he undertook an inspection tour to see the ongoing work at the market. 

Perera said that while work on the construction of the market suffered a setback in the past few months, the work has now been expedited and will be completed by November.

State Minister of Urban Development, Coast Conservation, Waste Disposal, and Public Sanitation Dr. Nalaka Godahewa who also took part in the inspection tour said once the Manning Market is shifted to Peliyagoda, the two acres of vacant land in Pettah will be used to develop public facilities and will be joined with the Fort Railway Station to ease traffic congestion in the area.

The new Manning Market in Peliyagoda is on 15 acres of land and will consist of over 11,000 shops, a massive vehicle park, resting areas for workers, cool rooms, banking facilities, etc.

The market has been designed by the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB). The work is being undertaken with the advice of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Minister of Urban Development and Housing.

Several other officials joined the inspection tour.
