A meeting between Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana and Malaysian High Commissioner Tan Yong Thai was held yesterday at the Sethsiripaya Stage II office premises in Battaramulla.
The Ambassador recalled the long-standing relations between Sri Lanka and Malaysia and spoke on the further strengthening of the friendship between the two countries.
He also recalled the official visit of former Malaysian Prime Minister Haji Mohammad Naajib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak to Sri Lanka in December 2017, marking an important milestone in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The Ambassador commended the Government for its efforts in controlling the spread of the coronavirus and for vaccinating the people in a timely manner. He also said that economic ties between the two countries need to be further strengthened to further strengthen bilateral ties in the current period following the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Ambassador also commended Sri Lanka’s interest in working with his country on maritime trade and maritime infrastructure development to strengthen the economy of the people living in the Indo-Pacific region.
Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana stated that there has been an increase in the number of Malaysian tourists visiting Sri Lanka after the spread of the coronavirus. He also said that Sri Lanka, one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world, will attract more Malaysian tourists in the future. He also said that an investment friendly environment was being created in the country and therefore Malaysian investors could come and invest in Sri Lanka.
Malaysian Mission Deputy Head Kairi Shadila and Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation Ravindra Hewawitharana were also present.
