SLPA Chairman Keith D. Bernard
Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Keith D. Bernard recently said that the Port of Colombo is set to enhance its productivity and efficiency in global port operations by adopting advanced port technology and automation.
He made these remarks whilst delivering the keynote address at a seminar organised by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (UK) Sri Lanka Branch, held on 27 August, at the Olympic House in Colombo. The seminar focused on ‘The Impact of Port Congestion, Space Restrictions, and Equipment Shortages on Supply Chains.’
“Despite facing challenges like congestion, limited space, and equipment shortages, the Port of Colombo remains a strong and essential hub in global trade,” Bernard stated.
He highlighted the Port’s resilience and adaptability amid these ongoing challenges.
Bernard outlined several technological initiatives aimed at improving the Port’s operations and logistics capabilities. These include implementing state-of-the-art smart terminals, Advanced Terminal Operating Systems (TOS), a Port Community System (PCS), a Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS), and a Megaport Radiation Detection System. Additionally, the Port plans to introduce the latest ERP systems and green port initiatives to further streamline operations and support sustainability efforts.
“The Port of Colombo was recognised as the best-performing port globally for the first quarter of this year, with an impressive growth rate of 23.6%,” Bernard said, emphasising on the Port’s operational success and growth trajectory.
Bernard also mentioned the Port’s readiness to handle distress vessels, highlighting recent technological advancements and the Port’s capability to manage unexpected surges in cargo volume due to regional disruptions.
“Through strategic infrastructure improvements, effective crisis management, and adaptive responses to global trends, the Port continues to play a crucial role in supporting both national and international supply chains,” he added.
With these advanced solutions, the Port of Colombo aims to maintain its position as a vital node in the global maritime network, ensuring efficiency, security, and resilience in the face of evolving global trade dynamics.
