Ramona J. Smith, the global Toastmasters champion from the USA who outperformed 30,000 other international speakers in the championship known as ‘The Olympics of Public Speaking’ will conduct three sessions at the Colombo Hilton, 5 and 6 February.
Ramona, a teacher, speaker and author from Houston, Texas is the first woman to win the championship in 10 years, and only the second African-American woman to win in the competition’s 96 year history. She is also only the fifth female to win the title since women were allowed to compete in 1970.

Her visit to Sri Lanka is organised by SAPA Events, the events arm of South Asian Public Affairs (SAPA Consulting) based in Colombo. The three sessions are targeted at different audiences:
‘Sealing the Deal and Ensuring a Positive Customer Experience’ (5 Feb., 9:30 a.m.) is for corporate and hospitality sector personnel desiring to improve their presentation and client-facing skills. ‘Be Yourself to Unleash the Champion in You’ (5 Feb, 3:30 p.m.) is a session for women where Ramona will share her story of resilience leading to success, and the communication skills essential to be outstanding.
‘Straight Talk for IT Professionals’ (6 Feb, 9:30 a.m.) is aimed at IT professionals and start up founders seeking to speak with confidence and deliver technical information in a simple manner. According to SAPA Consulting’s Marketing and Business Development Manager Samala De Alwis, “We have realised there is a captive audience in Sri Lanka for high quality speakers, performers and artistes of all genres. We are pleased to kick off 2019 with a champion speaker of the calibre of Ramona Smith and we have plans to host other outstanding personalities from different fields throughout the year.”
SAPA Events have hosted several events in the past few years including the Sri Lanka Economic Forum in 2016 together with the Open Society Foundation, USA. Recently SAPA Events presented the well-known Indian singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam at the BMICH for a total sell out show.
