Russel Fonseka new AAT Sri Lanka President

W. P. Russel Fonseka assumed office as the eleventh President of the Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT Sri Lanka) on 5 February, and has presided over meetings of the Governing Council since.

Fonseka joined the Bank of Ceylon in 1990, and was admitted to Corporate Management in 2012. He has held many senior leadership positions ranging from strategic planning, financial management, retail banking, international affairs, and treasury operations, and has served as an active member of many management committees of the Bank since. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer/Senior Deputy General Manager (Corporate & Offshore Banking) of the Bank.

In addition, Fonseka possesses an array of academic and professional qualifications. He graduated with a B.Sc. (Special) degree in Business Administration from the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Management from the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM), and a MBA from the University of Southern Queensland, Australia.

Further, Fonseka is a fellow Member of CA Sri Lanka and AAT Sri Lanka. He serves as a member of the Statutory Accounting Standard Committee of CA Sri Lanka. He is also a Senior Fellow Member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and a Member of the Alumni of Harvard Business School of USA.

Fonseka serves as a Director on the Boards of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC, Property Development PLC and Transnational Lanka Records Solutions (Private) Limited. He is an Alternate Director on the Board of LankaClear (Private) Limited. He also functions as the Chairman of the Audit Committees of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka & Finance PLC, Property Development PLC and LankaClear (Private) Limited. 

During the past 32 years, AAT Sri Lanka has been a benchmark of excellence in the professional education sector, training and qualifying its members and students to be outstanding winners who are knowledgeable, capable and transparent in all that they do.

At present, nearly 6,000 active professional members and over 37,000 passed finalists, AAT Sri Lanka has become one of the leading educational bodies in the region that has consistently produced a large number of accounting professionals, much needed to a growing economy.
