SLIIT hosts Colours Night 2021 to honour and celebrate 220 outstanding sporting stars

SLIIT Colours award ceremony 2019/2020

 

 


Celebrating and honouring the achievements of 220 sportsmen and women for their dedication and hard work during the years 2019 and 2020, SLIIT’s Physical Education and Sports Unit organised a glamourous Colours Night 2021 recently.

Due to health and safety precautions, the ceremony was organised in two sessions. The Chief Guest for Session 1 was celebrated Sri Lanka cricketer and ICC Hall of Fame member Muttiah Muralitharan, while Sri Lankan Olympians President Sriyani Kulawansa graced Session 2 as Chief Guest.

At the ceremony, SLIIT awarded colours to 220 outstanding sportsmen and women across 12 sporting categories for the year of 2019 and 2020. 

The Most Outstanding Sportsman of the Year was awarded to Buwaneka Goonethilleka for his prowess in badminton. He was placed 4th during the Commonwealth Games and among the Top 8 in the Asian Games, both held during 2018. In 2019 he was won awards as the Men’s Singles Champion and Men’s Doubles Champion for the Defence Open Badminton Championship, the NCPBA Open Badminton Championship and the XLV National Sports Festival.

The Most Outstanding Sportswoman of the Year was presented to Tharindhie Alles for her contribution to basketball, netball and athletics. She was the SLIIT Sports Council President and the Captain of the SLIIT basketball team. During her tenure and under her leadership, two new sports were introduced to SLIIT’s sporting arena such as futsal and tag rugby. SLIIT teams successfully competed and were placed in tournaments during competition with other universities. 

The Best All-round Student of the Year for SLIIT sports was awarded to Omal Alahakoon for his achievements in football and futsal. His list of accomplishments includes SLIIT Futsal Captain 2017 to 2019, Vice President of the SLIIT Sports Council 2018 and supporting the Futsal team to win numerous tournaments and championships.
