In a pioneering display of technological excellence, SLT-Mobitel transformed the ‘IESL Robo Games 2024’ competition into an inspiring technological showcase, with the grand finale held recently, setting new benchmarks for robotics innovation in the country. Going far beyond traditional corporate support, SLT-Mobitel’s active involvement demonstrated the commitment to championing Sri Lanka’s digital transformation, nurturing the nation’s brightest young minds.
The IESL Robo Games 2024 concluded successfully with an impressive display of innovation and technical skill from undergraduate and school students across the island. The event encouraged collaborative problem-solving, technological advancements, and AI-driven solutions, positioning Sri Lanka as an emerging hub for robotics and AI development in the region.
Proudly collaborating with the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL), SLT-Mobitel, demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Sri Lanka’s digital future and next generation of technological innovators by providing comprehensive technological infrastructure, specialised expertise, and immersive learning opportunities throughout the prestigious competition.
The initiative aligns well with SLT-Mobitel’s broader mission of accelerating the nation’s digital transformation bringing together young talent including school children, university students and youth to build and create a more innovative future for the country.
SLT-Mobitel’s involvement included deploying a dedicated technical team that worked alongside event organisers to create an optimal competition environment. SLT-Mobitel engineers provided real-time troubleshooting assistance, high-speed connectivity solutions, and advanced technological infrastructure that ensured seamless execution of the complex robotics challenges.
In collaboration with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Moratuwa and IESL, SLT-Mobitel helped orchestrate specialised learning sessions that transformed participants’ theoretical knowledge into practical skills.
The competition brought together young minds passionate about robotics, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems, challenging them to design and build autonomous robots capable of completing complex tasks. Leading up to the main event, participants engaged in learning sessions designed to enhance their skills, including a workshop on ‘Mastering Webots,’ which introduced them to the industry-standard Webots robotics simulation platform. This was followed by a hands-on workshop titled ‘Kobuki Robots in Motion,’ where participants gained practical experience with real Kobuki robot platforms. Specialised sessions on testing and troubleshooting were also conducted to help teams optimise their designs and programming.
The grand finale showcased extraordinary talent, remarkable creativity and technical knowledge across multiple categories. In the School Category, Team GOAT 12000 from Elizabeth Moir Senior School claimed the Champion title. The team comprised Tharul Sandinu Senanayake, Kavindu Sankalpana Rasanjana Pathirage, and Maleeka Sanketh Raddygala. Team AutoNova from the University of Moratuwa emerged victorious in the University Category, represented by Shehan Sudeepa Perera, Tharusha Dilshan Bandara, and Dhawala Sanka Rajakaruna. Team OG Nemesis dominated the Open Category competition, with team members Subash Tissera, Shahan Piumantha, Ranneth Udawatta, Tharana Chandrapala, and Mahela Sadaruwan.
Representing SLT-Mobitel at the awards ceremony, the Guest of Honor, Deputy Chief Marketing Officer – Product Management Eng. Rohana Ellawala, graced the event and during his speech highlighted the growing importance of robotics in Sri Lanka’s technological landscape. He emphasised its role in shaping the future of innovation and industry advancements. Several other officials also participated in the ceremony, further showcasing SLT-Mobitel’s commitment to fostering innovation and supporting the next generation of robotics talent in Sri Lanka.
