The Cabinet of Ministers at their meeting on Monday approved signing a long-anticipated bilateral Civil Aviation Agreement between Sri Lanka and Italy, to enhance connectivity and boost stronger ties between the two nations.

Discussions on the agreement began several years ago, with initial Cabinet approval for its signing granted as far back as July 2018. However, despite mutual interest, the agreement remained unsigned.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the recent consultations between the two Governments have highlighted the urgency of formalising the arrangement, culminating in this renewed commitment.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two countries will establish fixed weekly schedules for air services. This includes up to 14 scheduled routes for passenger flights and seven routes for cargo services on mutually agreed paths. The agreement allows for the use of any type of aircraft, giving airlines operational flexibility.

Dr. Jayatissa said that the agreement would not only strengthen Sri Lanka’s air links with Europe but also create opportunities for trade, tourism and cultural exchange.

Italy, home to a significant Sri Lankan diaspora, has long been a vital destination for Sri Lankan travellers and this agreement is expected to ease travel and improve accessibility for both passengers and cargo.

The proposal to this effect presented by Transport, Highways, Port and Civil Aviation Minister Bimal Rathnayake was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
