Sri Lanka featured at DSAL International Bazaar in Beirut

In line with the Cultural and Public Diplomacy initiatives of Sri Lanka, the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Lebanon took part in DSAL International Charity Bazaar on 1 December at the Phoenicia Hotel, Beirut.

International Charity Bazaar 2019 was organised by the Diplomatic Spouses’ Association of Lebanon (DSAL) to deliver a shopping experience with flavours from overseas. The event was themed to promote zero waste and an eco-friendly environment. The bazaar drew many Lebanese and foreign nationals despite the political and civil unrest prevailling in the country.

Twenty Foreign Missions accredited to Lebanon, more than 45 private sector organisations, and registered green Lebanese Non-Governmental Organisations took part the bazaar. Stalls exhibited and sold handicrafts, cloth, cosmetics, jewellery, eco-products, organic products, wine, Christmas décor, household items, toys and wrapped food. A children’s game area was also organised to promote eco-friendly activities.

The Sri Lanka stall sold handicrafts, batik and handloom clothes, leather products and accessories from Laksala. In addition, the Sri Lanka Women’s Association in Lebanon collaborated at the stall representing Sri Lankan expatriates and their authentic products. Organic and herbal sample products offered by Hettigoda Industries and Ceylon Nutrinut Holding Companies were also demonstrated.

In the sideline of the Bazaar, the Sri Lankan dance troupe vibrantly showcased their unique cultural heritage and was very well received by the audience. The dance troupe consisted of young and talented migrant Sri Lankans. The draping of Sri Lanka national dress was a unique experience for visitors.

The stall was decorated to promote tourism and pronounced colourful and interesting by many. Leaflets to promote Ceylon Tea and brochures in Arabic, French and English that publicise Sri Lanka as a travel destination were also distributed among the attendees.

The proceeds of the event were donated to charity organisations. Ambassador Shani Calyaneratne Karunaratne and the staff of the Embassy participated in the event. At the outset, Tourleb, a Lebanese tour company specialising in eco-tourism, had a discussion with Ambassador Karunaratne on sending tourist groups to Sri Lanka.
